It was the largest multi-sport and cultural event ever held in Scotland. Approximately 7, athletes and team officials, representing 71 nations and territories from across the Commonwealth, took part. The sporting competition covered 17 sports across medal events. This included 22 medal events across five para-sports. This was the largest integrated para-sport programme of any Commonwealth Games to date.
Glasgow won the bid to host the XX Commonwealth Games in The Games were widely considered successfully delivered. We were rated satisfactory, the highest rating, in our last sportscotland Development Audit in It demonstrates how a public interest led development approach and wider regenerational activities can shape a new market and place where none existed before.
This case also demonstrates the importance of an active land policy and masterplanned approach. The Commonwealth Games Village is a 38 hectare 94 acre urban brownfield regeneration site, located in Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow. The River Clyde forms a natural boundary which loops around its southern and eastern edges. The Games played host to aided by an army of up to 15, volunteers. Using the power of sport and culture this unique partnership aims to inspire, enable and empower the children of the Commonwealth to be the best they can be.
The Scottish Commonwealth Games Youth Trust SCGYT has been operating since , with the aim of helping young Scottish sportspeople to improve and make use of their abilities as athletes, sports coaches, sports administrators and referees, umpires and judges - by way of grants, bursaries, loans or otherwise.
It aimed to minimise its impact on the environment and seek opportunities that will enhance the environment. One way of doing this is to adopt a strategy of sourcing local food, where possible, from sustainable and traceable sources.
Glasgow also aimed to promote healthy living via the provision of a variety of authentic foods, including healthier options.
